adonis 2005

I got asked a lot of questions over and over during this last four months about this contest, so here's where I'll do my best to answer as many as I can. Some of these are repeat questions from last year, but they got asked again, so I'm answering again. :)

  • What were the vote percentages?
Always the most common question, and I always tell all after the contest is kaput. Color-coding should make it easy to follow qualifiers, bottom groups, and eliminations. Weeks Nine & Eleven get specific as to which guys were in each of those weeks' mysterious "groups."

  • What does the winner get?
There's no official award for winning the Adonis contest, so I guess the winner just gets bragging rights. Or, maybe he just gets to get mercilessly teased around the set by his co-stars.

  • What made you think of this great contest in the first place?
It started last year when I was in the grips of an "American Idol" fix. I also wanted to teach myself how to do some basic Web programming in Flash, so this contest was an excuse to do so that I knew would keep me interested.

  • Do you watch all of these soaps? Which is your favorite?
I am generally familiar with all of the soaps. In the past, I have been a faithful viewer at different times of Y&R, DAYS, OLTL, AMC, and GH. I have never really gotten into GL or B&B, but I sort of know who everyone is on those shows. The only soap I watch faithfully now is ATWT. I never miss an episode.

  • Why wasn't my favorite soap hunk, (fill-in-the-blank), included?
I received a fair amount of complaints that certain actors were not in the finals. Many of them WERE in the semifinals, but the public did not vote them through to the finals. Aside from that, I just tried to spread the wealth as best I could.

  • How are the judges (who pick the wildcards) selected? Can I be one?
My buddy DaveId, who runs Dreamcaps, provides the lion's share of the screen captures featured on my site, so I owe him a judge's spot (plus he's a pal and he knows a lot about soap hunks!). This year's new judge, soapgal, is another friend of mine who loves the men of soaps like I do. I picked her just to have a female judge. I'll probably be sticking with these judges again next year. But thanks to everyone for volunteering!

  • How could Contestant X get voted off in Week X when he wasn't even in the Bottom Three the week before?
As I mentioned during one of the shows, nothing motivates the voters more than their guy being in the Bottom Three. Guys who in the bottom group one week usually saw their votes spike the next week, often meaning the guy who was one spot away from the bottom group one week would be eliminated the next. Study the voting percentages at the top of this page and you'll find a pattern.

  • Did the finalists know about Adonis 2005?
At least some of them did. Here's what I know: Justin Hartley and Eric Martsolf both knew about their status as finalists all along from conversing with fans on each of their official sites' message boards. I know that Justin Bruening and Brody Hutzler knew about last year's contest, so it stands to reason they knew about this year's. I'm sure Grayson McCouch's insane fans will fill him in about his improved performance this year. The contest was discussed a good bit on Aiden Turner's and James Scott's respective sites, but I don't know for sure if those actors visit those boards. Some of you Mark Collier fans need to let me know what he thinks about being this year's winner. If you know anything I don't know about any of these actors' reactions, please send me an e-mail. Thanks!

  • Why weren't there any minority finalists?
Well, there were minority semifinalists, but they just didn't get voted through. Am I the only one who sees the perfection of Y&R's Shemar Moore, DAYS' Rhassan Orange, and B&B's Antonio Sabato, Jr.?

  • Who did you expect to win?
Mark Collier was in fact my early pick to win, but as the week's progressed, I figured it would end up being a shoot-out between Justin Hartley and Greg Vaughan, both of whom I totally underestimated this year.

  • Who did you want to win?
I didn't really have a personal preference, but I was pleased that Mark Collier finally got a title. I also had a soft spot for James Scott this year, whom AMC is woefully under-utilizing.

  • What was the biggest surprise for you in this year's contest?
There were plenty, but I would say the great leap taken by Justin Hartley. Here he finished 11th last year, and now out of nowhere ended up in 3rd. Another one was that DAYS conveniently negated the inclusion of my wildcard pick, Austin Peck, by delaying his return until September from the originally-announced June.

  • What happened to Justin Bruening?
After winning Adonis 2004, Justin Bruening only finished 9th this year. I really think this happened for two reasons: 1) he had double the competition from his own show with James Scott and Aiden Turner; and 2) voters just wanted to spread the wealth and let someone else win for a change. I know from voter comments that Mr. Bruening is still absolutely LOVED.

  • You mean I could have voted three times per week?  AKA  How come I could only vote three times per week?
It was all there in black and white. :)

Three votes per IP address per week. That's IP address, not e-mail address -- apparently some people don't know the difference. No problem, as I eliminated any multi-votes beyond the third, but we still had some people trying to stuff the ballot box. Three votes per week is enough to spread the love in case you were supporting more than one guy, but not enough to unfairly stunt the natural beauty of the vote.

  • Why did so many people got multi-quoted but I was never quoted at all?
Like last year, I was looking for creative & clever votes to quote. I quoted a handful of people a lot because they were very good at coming up with good quotes. I ALWAYS picked the quotes before I even looked at who wrote them, so I wasn't really trying to use people more often than others.

  • What was the funniest quote you read from a voter?
Well, since I try to keep this site as PG-13 as possible, I can't say verbatim. But let's just say I got a handful of ballots indicating that several people would like to have some XXX-rated things done to them by the finalists! LOL

  • Will you send all of these quotes we are writing to the finalists?
Um, no. Let the soap hunks listen to the shows themselves!

  • Was that really you talking on the Adonis shows?
Yes, that's me. Please tell me I sounded okay.

  • Are you a boy or a girl?
Well, if that's me talking on the shows, I hope to God I'm a boy! :)

  • Where are you from?
South of the Mason-Dixon line, east of the Mississippi River, north of the heart of Dixie, and west of the Carolinas.

  • How much time does it take to run this site and make the Adonis shows?
I'm a little faster now than I was when I started. Making an Adonis show takes me about 90 minutes from the time I write the script to the time when the Flash movie is finished & uploaded on Wednesday nights.

  • Will there be an Adonis 2006?
    Yes.

  • The little square picture you used for my favorite finalist was terrible, and that contributed to him getting voted off!
Gimme a break! All 12 of those guys looked great in their pictures!

  • Where did you find those sites that were on the "breaks" during the Adonis shows?
Hey, I surf the Web just like you guys do. Now that this site's hits are in the millions each year, I am trying to help pay for the high costs of running the site by earning a few pennies whenever you join any of the sites featured in the ads of the Adonis shows. They are all accessible from my site's links page. Please join up!

  • I love this site! What else do you have coming up?
Aside from regular picture updates, the next big feature is the 7th Annual Soaphunks.net Awards, which happens at the end of the year. You can see results from the first six awards here.
